A man underwent emergency surgery last night after being stabbed at his home in the Auckland suburb of Northcote.
Police arrived at the man's home last night and found him with a serious stab wound to his chest.
Police spokesman Kevin Loughlin said medics and a police officer performed CPR on the man.
He was taken to Auckland Hospital in a critical condition.
Mr Loughlin said a 40-year-old woman had been arrested and charged with assault. Further charges have not been ruled out.
He said police were still looking for a weapon.
"Police are interviewing several witnesses who were inside the house at the time the stabbing took place," Mr Loughlin said.
He said police cordoned the house off overnight and were not looking for anyone else.
