Man hospitalised after fire in west Auckland

A man has been taken to hospital with serious burns after a fire in a west Auckland garage tonight.

Emergency services were called to the property on Metcalfe Rd in Ranui at 10.01pm, northern fire communications centre shift manager Scott Osmond said.

The fire was relatively small and quickly extinguished but caused serious burns to the man's upper body.

A police spokesman said he was taken to Middlemore Hospital, where the region's specialist burns unit is located.

Fire service investigators were working to established what caused the fire.

Police were also in attendance.
