A 25-year-old man is in a serious condition in Wellington Hospital following an assault in the central city in the early hours of this morning.
Detective Senior Sergeant Donna Howard said the victim and two of his friends were approached by a group of men opposite the Tournament carpark on Tory Street about 3.50am.
Ms Howard said the victim was then assaulted, receiving significant head injuries.
"One of his friends received minor injuries and has been treated in hospital. The third male was unharmed," she said.
"We are urging anyone who was in the Courtenay Place area between 3am and 4.30am this morning, who witnessed any fights or incidents or who may have seen the offenders running off along Tory Street around 4am to come forward and speak to police as soon as possible."
