A Mt Maunganui man has been flown to Auckland Hospital seriously ill after being bashed by a burglar, police have said.
The 47-year-old man came home after a night out with his partner to find a burglar loading a red car with their household possessions.
The couple blocked the driveway with their car and the man attempted to overcome the burglar but was knocked unconscious with a metal bar.
His partner then rushed into the house to call the police.
The burglar and his female accomplice rammed their way out of the driveway and made off with both cars, as well as several household possessions.
The victim was initially taken to Tauranga Hospital before being transferred by helicopter to Auckland for neurosurgery early this morning where he remains in serious condition.
Police are now looking for a red car and the stolen blue Jaguar XJR8.
