A man escaped with minor injuries when hit by a vehicle on State Highway 1 south of Woodlands, Southland.
Police said the man was hit after walking into the middle of the highway about 6.15am today.
Police, fire service and ambulance attended the scene, and the man was taken to Southland Hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Medical staff described the man as very lucky to have survived the incident, police said.
The incident is still being investigated.
