Man hit and killed by Wellington train

A man in his 50s has been hit and killed by a train north of Wellington city this afternoon.

The man was struck just north of Kaiwharawhara Railway Station about 2.45pm, police said in a statement.

Police were at the scene and speaking to witnesses to attempt to establish the circumstances.

Delays to train services in and out of Wellington were expected for a few hours following the collision.
