A robber armed with a screwdriver yesterday fled with what police called a "significant" amount of cash, in Auckland's third bank robbery in two days.
The man entered the Vulcan Lane National Bank in the central city about 2pm and threatened staff before running off with the money. He was captured soon after. The screwdriver and cash were also found.
Business owner Alastair Bryan - whose coffee and sandwich shop is opposite the bank in Vulcan Lane - said he believed the robber entered through the back of the branch.
No one was hurt during the robbery and the branch was closed afterwards, as police interviewed staff and customers.
The incident came a day after two bank robberies - 20 minutes apart - in Auckland on Tuesday.
A man entered the Kiwibank Post Shop on Dominion Rd in Mt Eden and demanded cash about 2.45pm on Tuesday.
Then at 3.05pm, a man with an axe entered the ASB Bank on the corner of Richardson and Dominion Rds in Mt Roskill, about 5km away.
Inspector Anthony Edwards said police were looking into the possibility the three robberies were connected.
The men who committed Tuesday's robberies were still at large last night.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Joe Aumua at the Avondale police station: (09) 820 5714.
