A man with a note saying he had a gun robbed a bank in Kaitaia this afternoon.
Just before 4pm, a man wearing a backpack walked into an ANZ branch on Commerce St. He handed a note to a teller demanding money and indicating he had a firearm, said northern communications Inspector Andrew Brill.
It was not clear how he left the bank, although it may have been on foot, Mr Brill said.
The man - described as a fair-skinned Maori, of solid build with a goatee - left with an undisclosed amount of money.
Aside from staff members, there were four customers in the bank.
