A 51-year-old man who attacked and killed his 21-year-old partner with two boning knives outside their Dunedin home has been sentenced to life in prison, with a minimum non-parole period of 12 years.
Matakaua (Karl) Ngaruaine Rouvi appeared for sentence at the High Court in Dunedin today.
In front of their three-year-old daughter, Rouvi fatally stabbed Moana Anahera Marie Aranui on January 26 this year when she went to their house the day after she told him she was leaving him.
Miss Aranui sustained 21 wounds in all, six of them deep stab wounds, as Rouvi chased her around their Bayview Rd rental home.
When he had finished, he stabbed himself in the chest five times.
Miss Aranui died in a carport where she had sought shelter about 70m from the house.
Rouvi pleaded guilty to a murder charge earlier this year.
