A man has suffered serious unexplained injuries at a Housing New Zealand-owned flat in Waiwhetu in Lower Hutt. The man has been taken to Hutt Hospital, where police are speaking with him. His injuries are now being described as moderate and he is in a stable condition.
A female neighbour, who asked not to be named, said the area was suffering from the influence of Black Power gang members.
"I didn't hear this one, but I'm not surprised if something happened. At the beginning of this year someone else got shot, and that was another stupid gang thing."
The woman said synthetic drugs were being sold in the area, and it was making the gang influence worse.
Ambulance officers were called about 5pm to White Lines East, and called policeat 5.05pm.
