A man aged in his twenties died after being stabbed in the chest in Manukau City last night.
Emergency services were called to Tullis Place, near Botany, shortly before 8pm and found the man lying on the footpath.
Ambulance staff performed CPR on the man and rushed him to Middlemore
Hospital, but he died, said northern ambulance communications team
manager Brett Tobeck.
He said the man was in his twenties and had suffered "penetrating trauma" to the chest.
Residents of Tullis Place told the Herald last night that the area where the man had been found was cordoned off with police tape and a policeman was standing guard.
Police northern communications staff said officers would guard the area overnight.
Yaso Mahendran said she and her family had arrived at their home about an hour after emergency services arrived, to find police blocking off the cul-de-sac.
"I knew it was something serious because the policeman told us to walk with him - he wouldn't let us go alone."
Mrs Mahendran said several neighbours had come outside to see what was happening, but no one had seen anything out of the ordinary or heard any noises, until police and ambulance staff arrived shortly before
8pm.
Counties Manukau police are investigating the circumstances of the young man's death, and a post-mortem examination is scheduled for today.
