Police suspect a man found dead on rocks at Whangarei Heads had been fishing but his identity remains a mystery.
Investigations are under way following the discovery of the man's body yesterday evening but at this stage it is not being treated as suspicious.
Detective sergeant Dave Wilkinson said Whangarei police were continuing to make inquiries today as they focused on trying to work out who the dead man was.
"We believe there is a possibility that the man was in the area fishing.
"We are still seeking to identify him and are asking for anyone who may have any information to contact Whangarei Police Station on 09 430 4500," said Wilkinson.
