Man found dead in Hawke's Bay car crash

A man is dead after a car crash in Central Hawke's Bay today, police say.

Police arrived at the scene on Takapau Road in Waipukurau about 6.30pm, Inspector Marty Parker, from central police communications, told NZPA.

"But when we got there the (car's) engine was cold, so I don't know how long it had been there," he said.

The 39-year-old man died at the scene and was the sole occupant of the car.

A member of the public found the car down a bank and contacted emergency services, police said.

Police did not believe other vehicles were involved.

The details of the driver would not be released until next of kin had been informed, police said.
