A Blenheim man who assaulted a camper who put human faeces in his girlfriend's handbag was sentenced yesterday to community detention and ordered to pay his victim's medical expenses.
Lance James Mackel, 20, was sentenced to three months' community detention in Blenheim District Court, and ordered to pay $173.80 reparation after admitting assault with intent to injure, the Marlborough Express reported.
Mackel was charged with injuring Andrew Carman, 58, of Wellington, whom he beat up after the older man put human faeces into Mackel's girlfriend's handbag, which was left in a car.
Carman had been annoyed at the noise being made by a group at the Cow Shed Bay Camp ground in Marlborough Sounds on November 28.
Judge Bruce Davidson said the assault was very nasty and resulted in nasty injuries.
Carman was earlier fined a total of $550 on charges of offensive behaviour and wilful damage. He was ordered to pay court costs and $650 reparation to the owner of the handbag.
