A 22-year-old man is believed to have drowned in the Waikato River at Hamilton last night.
Emergency services were called to the river near Jellicoe Drive just before 9pm.
It is understood the missing man and a friend were attempting to swim across the river when he disappeared.
Police andFire service staff combed the river banks and used a boat with thermal imaging equipment to search the river as far as the Fairfield Bridge, without success.
