Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man during a street fight in south Auckland overnight.
A second man, aged 27, is in a stable condition in Middlemore Hospital after undergoing surgery in relation to the incident.
Officers have cordoned off Nikau Street in Otahuhu, and forensic investigators are working at the scene.
Detective Inspector Sue Schwalger, heading the inquiry, said the shooting occurred at about 3am during a fight involving some 20 people.
She was unable to release the name of the deceased or give more information on his injuries, but said police were interviewing a number of witnesses in relation to the incident.
Herald photographer Glenn Jeffrey said a tent had been erected over the body of the dead man, outside a property on the corner of Nikau and Awa Streets.
A brown Subaru station wagon with a broken window was parked beside the tent and there were a number of broken beer bottles strewn on the ground, he said.
Dectective Inspector Schwalger said the cause of the street fight was unclear.
