A Manawatu man has admitted to giving false information to police investigating the murder of Scott Guy.
The 34-year-old man, an inmate in Manawatu Prison, pleaded guilty to a charge of making a false statement about Mr Guy's murder and will be sentenced next month, the Manawatu Standard reported.
The charge carries a maximum jail sentence of seven years.
Inquiry head Detective Inspector Sue Schwalger said police investigated the information after the inmate came to them.
The false statement was a one-off incident and should not deter others from coming forward, he said.
Mr Guy was shot dead in the driveway of his Aorangi Rd home on the outskirts of Feilding early on July 8 and police have so far struggled to make any headway in their investigation.
Police inquiries have focused on three chocolate labrador puppies taken from the property, two vehicles seen on Aorangi Road on the morning of the murder, and the shotgun used to kill Mr Guy, which has not yet been recovered.
