A man was last night fighting for his life after falling off a balcony east of Auckland city.
Emergency services were called to the Glen Innes flat about 6.45pm and took the man, in his 50s, to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition. He suffered broken bones and a severe head injury in the fall.
Residents last night said the set of flats mostly housed pensioners.
Malcolm Moses said he heard yelling and screaming coming from outside and went to investigate.
"I heard a lot of commotion. I looked outside and he was on the ground - not moving."
Mr Moses said the man and two other men - believed to be in their 60s - who lived at the house were known to be "heavy drinkers" and would often argue.
He said because there had been several seconds when the man was yelling and screaming, he believed that the man had been "holding on for dear life" before falling. "I believe he's fallen on his head onto the concrete."
Auckland CIB staff were last night speaking to two men in relation to the incident. The area where he fell was cordoned off.
Northern Police Communications Senior Sergeant Matt Rogers said staff were not looking for anyone else.
