Man escapes from police while waiting to appear in court

Police are hunting a man who escaped from police custody at the Manukau District Court yesterday.

Jason Pope, 33, was waiting to appear in court when he exited the building about 5pm yesterday through an unsecured door onto Wiri Station Road.

Pope is described as a 177cm tall European of medium-thin build with short brown hair.

He was wearing a black short-sleeved T-shirt with the word "AIR" on the front and dark-coloured pants with white sneakers when he disappeared.

Police said he was clean-shaven at the time and has heavily tattooed lower arms.

Members of the public are asked to call police on 09 295 0200 if they see Pope or know of his whereabouts.
