Man drowns in Ohope

A 22-year-old man drowned at Ohope Beach in the Bay of Plenty this afternoon.

Acting Sergeant Helen Hay said the man was boogie-boarding with friends when he got into difficulty in the surf.

He was not an able swimmer, she said.

The man was found lying facedown in the water and did not respond to revival efforts by ambulance and fire staff.

Another person, who was pulled from the water, survived.
