An elderly man drowned while swimming at a beach on the Kapiti Coast last night.
The 74-year-old man was swimming with his 51-year-old daughter when they got into difficulties at Peka Peka Beach about 6pm.
The woman managed to swim to shore and was taken to Wellington Hospital in a serious condition.
Her father was unable to swim to shore and disappeared from view. A member of the public found his body just off the beach about 20 minutes later and pulled him ashore.
Emergency services were unable to revive him.
