One man is lucky to be alive after a car crash at Piha, west of Auckland, overnight.
A police northern communications centre spokesman said the head-on crash left a vehicle containing four people upside-down in a creek and a male passenger submerged in water.
The spokesman said the crash happened near where a couple of parties were being held, and someone at the scene performed CPR on the injured occupant after he was dragged free from the wreckage.
He was flown in the Westpac rescue helicopter to Auckland Hospital.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
