Man dies in Waikato smash

A Hamilton man is dead and a young woman seriously injured when a Subaru Station wagon crashed in Waikato early today.

Detective Sergeant Michele Moore said three others in the vehicle were uninjured in the crash at Whitikahu, 20km northeast of Hamilton, about 1am.

The 23-year-old man died at the scene and the injured woman was taken to Waikato Hospital.

No other vehicles were involved.

Police appealed for help from anyone who may have seen a dark coloured Subaru station wagon driving in the area around midnight.
