Man dies in Waihi car smash

A man is dead after he lost control of his car and crashed into a tree in Waihi this evening.

The 20-year-old driver was trapped in the car and died shortly after emergency services arrived at the scene on Trig Rd at 6.40pm.

It is understood the man was the only occupant in the car, but as he lost control he clipped another vehicle and injured its driver.

The other man was transported to a nearby doctor's surgery to be treated for minor injuries, an ambulance spokesman said.

Inspector Cornell Kluessien at the police northern communication centre said the Serious Crash Unit are investigating.
