A man has died after two trucks crashed on State Highway Three near Te Kuiti.
Earlier reports from police said a woman had been seriously injured but according to the latest statement from police, a 78-year-old man has died.
Te Kuiti sub-Area Manager, Senior Sergeant Rob Van Kalken said the man was taken to hospital but later died of his injuries.
"Initial indications are that a small truck that had been parked up at a weigh station on the side of the road has pulled out into the path of an oncoming large truck.
"This resulted in the smaller truck being pushed several hundred metres down the road and the driver suffering what was first believed to be moderate to serious injuries."
Mr Van Kalken said the man's death has been referred to the coroner.
Inspector Lance Burdett said traffic is flowing but motorists can expect delays.
Mr Burdett said the police serious crash unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
