Police have arrested two men after a 41-year-old Lower Hutt man died in suspicious circumstances last night.
Detective Senior Sergeant Soni Malaulau told NZPA the man died last night in the Lower Hutt suburb of Taita.
The man had been drinking with associates shortly before his death, he said.
Police were still trying to establish what had occurred, but had charged two men with assault on the dead man.
Police were now awaiting the results of a post mortem that was being carried out tonight at Wellington Hospital.
Further charges were possible.
Mr Malaulau appealed for sightings of two women standing near a public telephone in Reynolds St about 7.30pm last night.
He would not comment on the two women's significance to the investigation.
