A man was killed when a gun went off after a drinking session in Waikato overnight.
Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson said the 22-year-old Ngaruawahia man had been out drinking with friends and when he returned home a gun was fired causing the fatal injuries.
No one else was being sought in relation to the "terrible tragedy", Mr Patterson said.
Police were interviewing witnesses and conducting a scene examination to try and piece together what happened.
Mr Patterson said the tragedy was a timely reminder that alcohol and firearms are not a good mix.
