Police name man killed in Taupo crash

Police have released the name of a man who died when his car crashed head-on with a truck near Taupo today.

He was Roy Carmichael, 66, from Taupo.

Sergeant Dave Frazer said Mr Carmichael's car collided head on with a semi truck and trailer unit about 6km south of Taupo on State Highway 1 just after midday.

He was the only person in the car.

Taupo Victim Support was assisting the truck driver, who was shaken but not injured, Mr Frazer said.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash but believe the northbound car had crossed the centre lane, collided with the truck and come to a stop underneath it.

Mr Frazer said road, vehicle and weather conditions were not contributing factors.

The road was closed for one hour.
