A Timaru man who went home after being pinned to a power pole by his runaway van, died several hours after initially refusing medical attention.
Desmond Alexander Bowman, 61, was driving home on Thursday night when he stopped at the crest of Rolling Ridges Road and got out of his car.
His van started to roll away and he became pinned against a power pole when he tried to stop it, police told the Timaru Herald.
He was stuck there for an hour before a passer-by helped to free him at about 10.30pm. The passer by then took him home after Mr Bowman insisted he was OK, Sergeant Mylen Hamilton told the Herald.
Later that night his condition deteriorated and he died at Timaru Hospital on Friday, Mr Hamilton said.
A Timaru Ambulance spokesman said the man only complained of a pain in his hip when he was picked up.
