A 22-year-old man has died near the Treble Cone ski area after slipping on ice.
Police senior sergeant Craig Dinnissen, of the southern district command centre, said emergency services were called to the scene near Wanaka at 1.10pm.
The incident had been reported to police, but Dinnissen would not say by who.
The body was found about an hour later.
Dinnissen was unsure how far the man had fallen or what he landed on. Police would not give the exact location of the incident or say why he was there.
