A 22-year-old Canterbury farm worker is dead after he lost control of his car, drove through a gorse hedge and rolled early this morning.
The man, from Leeston, about 40km southwest of Christchurch, was not wearing a seatbelt and was killed on impact, said Sergeant Jeff Bland, of Selwyn police.
There was no immediate explanation for the crash, which happened on a straight stretch of the Leeston-Taumutu Road, west of Lake Ellesmere, about 1.30am
The man was the sole occupant of the vehicle and police were investigating the cause.
His name will not be released until next of kin are informed.
