A man is dead after his quad bike apparently crashed in steep terrain in central Otago over the weekend.
Police said James Peter Barry Tuite, 20, from Winchester, north of Timaru, set out on a hunting trip alone on Friday afternoon in the Waipiata area but failed to return that evening when he was expected.
The alarm was raised with police about 11.30pm on Friday and the official search was planned to start on Saturday morning.
However, his body was found by a family member early on Saturday morning.
Police said Mr Tuite's family regularly went hunting on the land and knew the area well.
