A man has died after crashing his distinctive vehicle into a tree in Auckland yesterday.
The incident happened on Portage Road at Otahuhu about 2pm, Constable Graham Mako of the Counties Manukau Serious Crash Unit said.
"The vehicle, a (Mazda) RX7 was particularly distinctive as it had a custom paint job - pink at the front fading to a dark purple at the back with a graphic on the bonnet."
The car had been seen travelling at high speed before losing control on a bend and colliding with a tree. The driver was taken to Middlemore Hospital by ambulance but died last night, Mr Mako said.
"We are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or saw or heard the car prior to the crash and has not been spoken to by police to contact us as soon as possible."
