A man has died after he was involved in a multi-car crash in peak-hour traffic in Wellington this evening.
Emergency services were called to the scene about 5.30pm with several reports of vehicle collisions on State Highway 1.
The 51-year-old man was taken by Wellington Free Ambulance to Wellington Hospital but had since died, police said. The serious crash unit has been notified.
SH1 is now fully clear and congestion has eased, the NZTA said. Diversions were in place earlier this evening and motorists were advised to expect delays, take alternative routes or postpone travel.
Northbound traffic heading out of Wellington was being diverted at the Tinakori Rd offramp on State Highway 1 after the crash.
