The 61-year-old Havelock North man who received injuries in an altercation at his home on Wednesday night died last night in Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital.
He was Walter William Middleton.
A 31-year-old Havelock North man appeared in the Hastings District Court yesterday charged with assault in relation to the incident. He was remanded in custody and will be next appearing in the Hastings District Court on 15 November.
Hastings Police and ESR staff are continuing to complete a scene examination at the Danvers Street house and will wait for the results of a forensic post mortem examination before making a decision on further charges being laid.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave de Lange of the Hastings Police said the victim and the arrested man were known to each other.
