Man dies after heart attack crash

An 84-year-old man who crashed a car in Auckland after suffering a heart attack has died in hospital.

His death is not likely to contribute to the official Easter road toll, which remains at zero, because the cause was medical.

The man was driving in Glen Innes when he suffered a heart attack yesterday morning.

He was taken to Auckland Hospital where he later died, police confirmed today.

The man was the sole occupant of the car. No other vehicles were involved and no one else was injured in the crash.

Acting Inspector Danny Meade of Auckland police said the heart attack caused the man to crash the car.

The man's death would unlikely count towards the road toll.

"He had a heart attack, he just happened to be driving his car at the time," Mr Meade said.

"The road deaths tend to be when the actual crash is the cause of the death."

There have been more than 200 road crashes since the holiday road toll period began at 4pm Thursday but no fatalities.

There were five road deaths last Easter.

The holiday road toll period ends at 6am on Tuesday.
