A man died early on Sunday morning after he fell off the roof of a car travelling at 100kph and was struck by another vehicle on State Highway 2 near Te Puke.
He was one of two deaths on the roads over the weekend.
A spokesman for the Police National Headquarters said the man had climbed out of the rear window of a car and was on the roof of the car when he fell at Paengaroa, 10km south east of Te Puke, about 5.20am.
He was hit by a car travelling in the opposite direction, which did not stop.
That vehicle was still being sought by police.
Another man died in Rodney County on Saturday night after driving into a stream and hitting a bank.
Police said the man visited Huapai Wines and Spirits at Kumeu, 25km northwest of Auckland and purchased lager, the empty cans were later found in his vehicle.
He then drove to a nearby residential address where he drank beer and a bottle of wine, but left about 10pm intending to return to the tavern.
However, he went over a bank, through a stream and crashed into the opposite bank.
He was not wearing a seatbelt and apparently hit both the windscreen and the rear screen.
His body was found in the vehicle by a group of cyclists on Sunday morning.
