Two people will appear in court tomorrow following the death of a man who was struck by a car during a street brawl in south Auckland early this morning.
The two accused, aged 16 and 24, will appear in Manukau Youth Court charged with assault following the incident at Gifford Rd, Papatoetoe.
Counties Manukau police district commander Superintendent Mike Bush said police were called to Gifford Rd about 1.30am "as a result of reports of fighting and an incident".
He said they were responding to reports that a vehicle had been driven into a crowd.
Witnesses and emergency services personnel tried to resuscitatethe man but he died at the scene.
Mr Bush said the two accused were likely to face further charges.
He said there were at least 40 partygoers inside and outside the address, of whom police had spoken to eight.
Police obtained details of most of the other partygoers but they are urging all who attended, along with anyone else who had knowledge of the incident, to contact them.
"Obviously we need to speak to every witness, regardless of if they all saw the same thing, we need to speak to everyone that was there."
Mr Bush said he would not give many details about the incident as two people had been charged, one of them a youth.
He said that it appeared a fight had spilled on to the road, and that only one vehicle was involved.
There was still a high police presence at the scene late this morning. The street remained cordoned off and the body of the victim appeared to still be at the scene until this afternoon.
