A man was killed this morning when he lost control of his car on a Waikato road, smashed through a wooden fence and landed in a hedgerow in a paddock.
Newton Matea Phillip Mitchell, 33, of Putaruru, crashed on a straight piece of road on State Highway 27 south of Matamata at about 11am, police said.
He was believed to have died after being struck by a post from the fence, Sergeant Graham McGurk of Matamata Police said.
Police were working to establish the exact time of the crash as no one had reported seeing it, and a number of motorists were believed to have passed the scene unaware of what happened.
The crash happened about three kilometres south of the racecourse during a period of heavy rain.
Crash investigators believed at this stage Mr Mitchell may have over-corrected a mistake.
