Man dies after car crashes on to rail track

A man is dead after his car careered off the road, crashed down a bank onto a railway track, and was hit by a train early today.

Constable Brad Hall of Pahiatua police said the accident happened between Woodville and Ngawapurua sometime between 1am and 2am today, and the train hit the car at about 2am.

It was not known whether the 32-year-old man from Eketahuna in northern Wairarapa died before or after the train hit the car.
