Man dies after being hit by freight train

A 35-year-old man died after being hit by a freight train in the Bay of Plenty township of Te Puke early today, police said.

Initial inquiries indicated that the man, who lived in Te Puke, was lying on the tracks at the time of the 2am incident, Senior Sergeant Rob Jones said.

There did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances, he said.

The victim's name has not yet been released.
