KEY POINTS:
A man who was floored with a single punch in a "senseless act" outside a bar on Friday night has lost his fight for life.
The man died in Auckland's Middlemore Hospital last night 24 hours after being found unconscious outside the Heading Home Bar in Pakuranga.
The victim, a local man, was knocked to the ground by a punch. He had serious head injuries.
The incident occurred during an argument about parking outside the bar on Ti Rakau Drive.
Police have not yet named the victim who was in his early 50s and lived in Pakuranga.
They said a 48-year-old man had been charged with assault pending the results of a post mortem examination.
"This is a senseless act that has resulted in tragic consequences," inquiry head Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Jones said this morning.
"The assault appears to have occurred, as a result of a verbal altercation involving one vehicle blocking another.
"This altercation escalated into a punch being thrown."
Mr Jones said that police had received assistance from members of the public.
However, they would like anyone else who was in the area to come forward.
