Police have confirmed that a man killed in Parnell, Auckland died a violent death.
At a press conference this afternoon, police said the man is Caucasian and aged in his mid-30s but they have yet to confirm his identity.
They believe he had just moved into a block of flats where his body was found on Tuesday night.
His body is to remain where it was found until tomorrow when it will be sent for an autopsy.
Police with a metal detector are mounting a grid search of the Parnell address after a homicide inquiry was launched.
The body of the man was found at about 9pm yesterday in an apartment at Claybrook Rd in Parnell, a suburb of Auckland.
The flat remained cordoned off today while police and forensic experts examined the scene.
The area appears to be one of student flats in a cul-de-sac.
A car has been cordoned off by police and the street sealed to traffic.
Police are cutting back undergrowth nearby with a machete in the search for clues.
