Man denies sparking Wellington police station bomb scare

The man who allegedly caused a bomb scare at the Wellington police station earlier this year appeared in court this morning charged with using threatening words.

Police say the 44-year-old, who has interim name suppression, used the words "It's got explosives in it, I'm angry with you guys and it's an IED", on March 14.

The alleged offending sparked an evacuation of the central city block, where a bomb disposal robot was used to carry out a series of controlled explosions on a suspicious package left at the station.

The man's charging document states he used the threatening words being reckless as to whether any person was alarmed or insulted by the words.

The charge carries a maximum fine of $1000.

He appeared in the Porirua District Court and entered a not guilty plea to an unrelated charge. He faces other charges of theft and unlawfully taking motor vehicles.

He told the court he planned to plead not guilty to his charges.

He has been remanded until July 13 for a case review.
