Man denies dragging dog behind scooter

A 69-year-old man is denying a charge of ill-treating a dog by dragging it behind his mobility scooter.

John McPherson entered his not guilty plea when he appeared in Christchurch District Court today with the help of a walking frame and wearing a kilt.

The police allege the dog was chained around the neck to the back of the fast moving scooter on November 15. The charge was laid under the Animal Welfare Act.

New Brighton residents allegedly intervened when they saw the dog was gagging and struggling to keep up. It was said to have required veterinary treatment and is being held by the SPCA until the court case is resolved.

McPherson, who lives in Aranui, was remanded on bail by Judge Jane Farish to attend a status hearing on February 16 to discuss arrangements for a defended hearing before a judge-alone.
