KEY POINTS:
Mystery remained last night over a man was found dead on his doorstep with another man lying unconscious in a car parked next to him.
The man, 30, was found dead by his partner at his Manuroa Rd flat in Takinini, South Auckland, about 7.15am yesterday.
The woman also discovered another man, 29, unconscious in the passenger's seat of a maroon Honda Odyssey parked next to her partner.
Police had not publicly identified the dead man last night because they were still trying to contact relatives.
It is understood the two men were neighbours who had been socialising together since Wednesday night.
The Honda was towed from the home, its front passenger window broken and a small pool of blood on the ground.
At the home next door, the brother and sister of the unconscious man, who did not want themselves or their brother named, said they had come to look after his children.
He was taken to Middlemore Hospital by St John Ambulance staff in a serious condition but recovered quickly and was discharged yesterday afternoon. He is helping police with their inquiry.
The siblings said their brother had been found "frothing at the mouth".
"He can't remember how he got into the car or what he was doing or nothing," the brother said.
He said he did not believe his brother took drugs.
The dead man's partner had apparently run across to his brother's home where she called an ambulance.
Police said the man's death was being treated as suspicious.
