A 27-year-old Whangarei man is dead after a car crash on Maungakaramea Rd about 16km south-west of Whangarei yesterday.
Emergency services attended a single vehicle motor accident at 9.30pm, Sergeant John Fagan, of Whangarei police, said.
"The vehicle was travelling towards Maungakaramea at the time of the accident and appears to have struck a bank after leaving the road.
"The sole occupant was thrown from the vehicle," Mr Fagan said.
Police believed the driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
It was unknown whether alcohol or speed were factors that contributed to the cause of the accident.
A full investigation was being undertaken and the matter was referred to the coroner.
