A 69-year-old Thames man is dead after a car he was in crashed into the back of a stationary truck near Maramarua in Waikato this morning.
The crash happened on State Highway 2 near the intersection with SH25, about 80km southeast of Auckland, about 5am.
The dead man, who has not been named, was a front seat passenger in the car, Sergeant Juliet Burgess of Huntly police said.
The driver of the car and the rear seat passenger were airlifted to Waikato Hospital with serious injuries while the driver of the truck was not hurt.
Police were keen to speak to anyone who saw the crash this morning.
"We know that one truck driver stopped to assist at the scene, but we would also like to speak to any other motorists who may have seen the crash happen," Ms Burgess said.
