Man dead after tour bus reverses into him

The elderly man who died after a bus revered into him at a South Island tourist hotspot today was an American tourist.

Police this evening identified the man as 73-year-old Richard Philip Hyde, from Massachusetts, United States.

He was injured at the carpark of Mt Nicholas Station, near Queenstown.

Mr Hyde was treated at the scene and then airlifted by helicopter to the Lakes District Hospital in Queenstown, where he later died.

Tour company Southern Discoveries said the incident happened at 1.35pm.

The vehicle was believed to have been making a slow backing manoeuvre.

The company said a full accident and emergency procedure was instigated by the company.
Staff were comforting Mr Hyde's wife, who was not travelling with him at the time.

Southern Discoveries chief executive Tim Hunter said all of its staff were "deeply shocked and saddened" by the incident. "Our deepest sympathies go to his family and friends."

The company was supporting staff involved and all Queenstown operations had been suspended until further notice.

A police serious crash investigation has been launched. Southern Discoveries is working closely with police and the serious crash unit investigating the incident.

WorkSafe NZ has been notified of the death.
