KEY POINTS:
Rescue teams have removed the body of a man who died after the rubbish truck he was driving crashed into the side of a house in Auckland.
The truck careered down Radiata Lane, in Birkenhead, before going over a driveway ledge and into a corner of the house, stopping in the kitchen, police said.
No one else was hurt in the incident.
North Shore area commander Inspector Les Paterson said the owner of the house was on her way out when she saw the Onyx truck and followed it - in time to see it lose control and hit her home.
The property has recently been sold and is due to be vacated on Thursday.
Inspector Paterson said the cause of the crash was not yet known but police were looking at mechanical error, brake failure or the possibility the driver had suffered a medical episode.
